Shamsher Ali earned an MSc in physics from Dhaka University in 1960 and a PhD in nuclear physics from Manchester University in 1965. Until 2006, he taught physics at Dhaka University. Before lecturing, he worked at Trieste's International Centre for Theoretical Physics. He served for the Pakistan and Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commissions, notably as director in Dhaka (1970–78).
